What are the Australasian Police Multicultural Advisory Bureau Awards?

The Awards have been set up to recognise police members, both sworn and non-sworn, who have contributed significantly to the development and advancement of partnerships between police and Australia's culturally diverse communities. The Awards aim to demonstrate, by example, the tangible benefits and positive outcomes of establishing harmonious relations between police and the multicultural community.

The Awards will provide those selected with national recognition for their role in establishing and enhancing harmonious relations between police and culturally diverse communities in their own State/Territory.

If you know of any police member, sworn or non-sworn (either an individual or team), who has contributed significantly to the advancement of positive relations between police and culturally diverse communities, please let us know by nominating them for an award.

A formal presentation will be held in each State/Territory and the successful individual/team will be presented with an award.

Who can nominate?

Nominations for an award are encouraged to be submitted by both police and community members. The Bureau strongly encourages nominations be accompanied by letters of support from peers and community members which acknowledge the contribution the individual/team has made to furthering harmonious community/police relations in a multicultural Australia.

Who can be nominated?

Individual police members, both sworn and non-sworn, or a team of police personnel can be nominated.

What is the judging panel looking for?

Successful nominees should be able to demonstrate achievement in one or more of the following hallmarks of excellence:

  • Innovation: pro-active and imaginative strategies that increase understanding, communication and trust between police and diverse communities.
  • Leadership: motivate and encourage fellow police members to increase their understanding and awareness of issues encountered by culturally diverse communities.
  • Enterprise: new ways of establishing positive relations between police and culturally diverse communities.
  • Foresight: implement pro-active strategies to avert or reduce potentially difficult situations or strategies that have the potential to prevent or reduce crime.
  • Sustainability: establish elements within a project or activity which will ensure that the project or activity takes on a life of its own after the initial input of resources and effort.
  • Learning: readiness to improve continually to meet the changing needs of culturally diverse communities.
