Promoting Harmonious Police/Multicultural Community Relations in Australasia

Corporate Information

Advisory Panel

The Advisory Panel was established under Clause 8 of the revised Memorandum of Understanding which stipulates the composition and function of the Panel (see Figures 1 and 2).

The main function of the Advisory Panel is to advise the Conference of Commissioners of Police, Australasia and the South West Pacific Region on Australasian Police Ethnic Advisory Bureau's (APMAB) activities and how these meet the corporate objectives. The Advisory Panel prioritises tasks for APMAB and provides expert advice on strategies to be adopted and projects to be implemented.

The inclusion of non-police representatives on the Advisory Panel, for example, the Executive Director of the Australian Multicultural Foundation and the Assistant Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, promotes the partnership policing philosophy and serves as a vehicle for consultation with the community sector.

The Advisory Panel meets bi-annually and alternates meetings across jurisdictions. The meetings serve as important national forums for the exchange of ideas and for the development of leading edge concepts in the area of police/ethnic relations. Guest speakers are also invited to share their expertise on relevant topics. In order to facilitate input from ethnic communities, the official business of the Advisory Panel is followed by meetings with invited ethnic community leaders and government representatives from host jurisdictions. This approach has proven valuable as it facilitates productive dialogue between jurisdictions and ethnic communities and, in many areas, eliminates duplication of effort.
