Guidelines

Australia has people from a wide range of multicultural backgrounds. Due to the cultural differences of these people, the Bureau is responsible for looking into issues such as police and multicultural youth relations, recruitment of multicultural police officers and general relations between the police and multicultural communities. From these concerns, various guideline publications have been produced to instruct police when dealing with multicultural communities.

• Multilingual Communication Guide for Police
  Developed to assist police in their interaction with non-English speaking members of the community including overseas visitors.
• A Practical Reference to Religious Diversity for Operational Police and Emergency Services
  This publication is currently being revised and updated and it is envisaged that the 3rd edition of a Practical Reference to Religious Diversity will be completed and available for viewing in 2006.
• Policing in a Culturally Diverse Australia: Governing Principles (PDF 25kB)
  Provides police jurisdictions in Australia with a philosophical framework for the development of policies and projects enhancing harmonious relations between police and multicultural communities in Australasia.
• Recruitment from Ethnic Communities: National Statement of Principle (PDF 11kB)
  Provides police jurisdictions in Australia with a philosophical framework for the development of policies and programs in the area of recruitment from multicultural communities.
• Guidelines for Organisers of Cultural Events: Demonstrations and Marches (PDF 13kB)
  Assists organisers with planning a well organised, peaceful event.
